Should you Leave your AC Running During A Thunderstorm?

A thunderstorm presents a number of threats when it comes to electricity. Not only does a storm include excessive rain in most cases, but lightning also strikes randomly. For this reason, it is logical to wonder about whether you should leave certain electronics, like an air conditioner, running while the storm rages on.

Old Wive's Tales

  • Many old wives tales warn of things you should or must do when it starts to rain and storm. One popular old wive's tale says you shouldn't bathe or wash dishes in a thunderstorm or you run the risk of getting shocked by lightning. One other old wive's tale says that you should turn off all of the televisions in your home, while another advises to turn off all electricity, period, and sit in the dark. Yet another recommends leaving an air conditioner on during a thunderstorm.

The Reality

  • The National Disaster Education Coalition suggests that you turn off your air conditioner during a thunderstorm. The air conditioner uses a significant amount of energy in the home and can trigger a power outage during a storm. Also, many air-conditioning units protrude from the home to the outside or sit outside, so electrical components could short due to the rain and lightning.

Suggestions

  • Watch weather forecasts to estimate when a thunderstorm is expected to hit your area. If possible, pull the air conditioner out of the window until the storm has passed. If it is a central unit located outdoors, place a cover over the unit. You can also simply place a cover over the protruding part of a window air conditioner. Rain water can corrode the metal and inner coils of the machine over time.

Ways to Keep Cool

  • If it is very hot during the thunderstorm, you'll have to explore other cooling options. Turn on a few house fans until the storm passes. You can crack a few windows slightly to let some ventilation into the house. If you have a lower floor or basement, go there until the storm is over. Because heat rises, lower levels will stay cooler than upstairs rooms.

Summer Is On It’s Way! Is Your Air Conditioner In Optimum Working Order?

It’s Almost Here:

The South Florida warmer weather we’ve looked forward to is about to arrive. Naturally, we’re focused on the thoughts and planning, that surround the summer months. But, here’s a question. Is your air conditioner ready once again, to work to full capacity?  Are the coils clean and free of debris and dust? And when did you last take a look at your filter? Living in South Florida we certainly know that summer brings, dust, pollen and various and sundry grime into not only the ac filter but due to humidity, into our homes and lives.  Personally, I call my local Margate air conditioning company for service yearly.

When Do We Check The AC Units ?
Summer is a wonderfully relaxing time of the year.  We find ourselves shelving projects that are long overdue.  Realistically?  This is a perfect time to make sure that any of the ac units you have, are in simple terms, “ready to go”.  The obvious reason being, the longer you wait for a dirty air conditioner to start running smoothly? The longer you will be breathing dirty, bacteria filled, air.

My Allergies Are Driving Me Crazy!
Welcome to Summer in South Florida.  Pollen, dust, ragweed, pesticides and various and sundry environmental allergy producing critters will naturally visit us once again. Some of them are expected and can be lived with.  Others, can become and invasive and unhealthy and create numerous allergy, sinus and asthma problems – when most, can easily be avoided (*or at least somewhat diminished) by breathing clean air. Even our favorite pets can produce dander, which can trigger a severe allergy or asthma attack.

Last Words:  This summer, contact your Margate air conditioning repair company early for an ac checkup. We have a safe and definitive way of making your summer, what it’s meant to be regarding good health.
And from us to you – Have a Wonderful Summer!

Simple Air Conditioning Tips for your Home

Below are a few simple tips from AJ Air Conditioning Service.  We like to provide our community with some helpful tips and advice to ensure a properly working air conditioning unit.  Additionally, these tips will help make running your AC more efficient and save you some money in the process.  South Florida AC repair companies often don't like to give free advice.  But AJ Air is here to help our neighbors!

Inspect you AC coils on the unit.  The coild in your AC unit attract tons of dust and debris.  To keep the unit running effecient, ensure that the coils are always clean.

Use overhead fans often:  On days when it's not extemely hot, use fans in your home to keep cooling costs low.  Fans run on less energy than air conditioning.  And while they won't make the room as cool as an AC, they'll provide some comfort while saving you some money.

Clean out AC filters:  An air conditioners performance is directly related to how efficiently it runs.  Making sure that filters are changed or cleaned on a monthly basis, will ensure that it runs effeciently.

These are a few simple steps everyone can take to cut costs and keep cool during the summer months.  If you should have more immediate issues or questions regarding you air conditioning in South Florida, please don't hesitate to contact AJ Air Conditioning.

Air Conditioning Issues to Address Before the Hot Summer Months

Living in South Florida, we all know what type of heat the summer season can bring.  So it's extremely important to have reliable air conditioning.  During these chilly winter months, you can easily look over your air conditioning system to ensure it runs properly  leading up to the hot summer months.

Here are some common issues associated with air conditioning systems:

No Cold Air Blowing-  This is a common issue with air conditioning systems in Fort Lauderdale that are place at the foot of a home.  Sometimes dirt and debris can get sucked through the vents and sucked into the condenser causing issues with the unit.  Additionally, a dirty AC filter can cause this common occurance as well.  Cleaning the filter to ensure no debirs buildup is essential.  If you still notice no cold air, call your local air conditioning repair company.

Loud Air Handler- This issue usually requires a service call because the technician will need to dive into the air conditioner itself.  Old air conditioning units may have a belt that is loose or needs replacing, while newer units may have a bearing issue.

It's always a good idea to act quickly when an issue arises.  Small issues can turn into larger ones if neglected.  Call your local Fort Lauderdale Air conditioning repair companies to address any issues prior to the warmer months.

Keep your AC running smooth

More times than not, air conditioning systems provide plenty of relief.  However, when they're not properly maintained, they can be a detriment to your health.

Regularly cleaning out your AC filters and maintaining your air conditioning in Fort Lauderdale will bring more benefits then just cool air.  Cleaning out your filter is one of the best things you can do to prevent air born allergies and mold from forming.  Step inside a home that doesn't clean their AC filter and you'll realize real quickly why you need to be proactive in the cleaning.  Runny eyes, scratchy throat, sneezing and runny nose are all symptoms related to allergies that stem from not maintaining you AC filter.

Try to inspect your filters on a monthly basis.  Replace any torn filters with new filters to ensure they're keep all the bad stuff out and the fresh, cool air in.  Not only will it keep your allergies in check, but your air conditioning unit will actually run more efficiently.

Be sure to have your AC unit regularly checked up and maintained by a HVAC certified technician.  Call your local Fort Lauderdale AC company to schedule a check up to ensure everything is working as normal.

AC Repair: Call before it's too late

When your AC breaks down, there's usually some hesitance in calling a local AC repair company.  If you're like me, you think you can fix everything!  Sometimes, changing a simple AC filter is all it takes to get your AC up and running at peak performance again.  Most people are not educated in AC lingo or teminology, and are scared of the repair bill.  However, waiting too long to repair your AC can lead to larger issues down the line.  Additionally, monthly maintenence contracts could be one of the best things you can buy... in the long run you wind up saving a ton of money, and you can rest assured that your AC will be repaired without a large bill.  For moderate to larger issues, sometimes it's best to cut your losses and contact your local AC repair company.

A quick search on the internet for " ac repair margate" brings up plenty of AC repair companies in my local area.  But keep in mind that not all are qualified for the job. Finding a reputable AC repair company that fits your personality and budget.
